Photo gallery – truffle hunters in Tuscany

I made a submission to an agency of some of my photographs of truffle hunters in Tuscany yesterday and thought it might be worth sharing them here.

I lived in Tuscany for about 3-4 years and became quite good friends with a number of the hunters in the area who took me out with them one winter on a truffle hunt. I can’t say I’m much of a fan of the taste of truffle, still it was an interesting process to watch the dogs finding them and we did have some success as these photos attest.

I’ve also enclosed some excerpts from an article I had published on truffle hunting. In Italian, truffle is tartufo (singular), tartufi (plural).

While these images are not necessarily of the western Christmas you might have in mind, here’s a few smiling faces bringing the cheer you should expect at this type of year.

5 travel photography tips – part 3

VP PHOTO TIP 11: Have you included everyone’s head? Look at the top of your view-finder to make sure.

VP PHOTO TIP 12: Have you included people’s feet? Look at the bottom of your view-finder to make sure.

VP PHOTO TIP 13: Have you fully framed your subject? Look into your view finder and see if the main subject is near the edge of the frame. If it’s not get closer.

VP PHOTO TIP 14: Where is your horizon line? Make sure it is parallel to the top or bottom of the view-finder and in the top or bottom third of the frame.

VP PHOTO TIP 15: Is your lens clean? You’ll get better shots. Get a cleaning cloth or fog the lens with your breath and wipe it clean.

Faces of Brisbane project – post 2

As per the previous post on this topic, I have started a project about the different faces of Brisbane whom I plan to interview and photograph and upload both to this blog.

These are some of the images I took of Mark, an itinerant who lives in the park near me in Brisbane. I will upload the sound bytes of his interview in the coming week.

Photo of the day – Cinque Terre sunset

The Cinque Terre (five towns) on the Ligurian coast in Italy is undoubtedly famous. Features include its dry walled vineyards, beautiful seaside vistas, gorgeous hillsides in the hinterland and all the colour of the towns itself with their seafood, markets, gelaterias and ristorantes.

This image was captured at sunset in Riomaggiore when a golden light bathed the town and the rocky strata on which its built for a few moments.
