Hanging with the locals on the Maluku Islands. Boats are esential for travel in this remote part of Indonesia. To get here from Jakarta was several hours flight, a ferry, long drive through the jungle and finally a journey in one of these boats with some friendly faces to man them. Apart from the ethno-political violence that has erupted here, villages have also faced the threat of palm oil plantations but at the time we visited had been resistant, recognising the importance of their jungle as a food source and the future for their children….See the previous Insta post for details about the ethno-political conflict in this area….From the archives: Maluku Islands, Indonesia, 2011….#iloveindonesia #igtravel #lonelyplanetindonesia #lonelyplanet #lonelyplanettraveller #maluku #malukuislands #guardiantravelsnaps #bbctravel #betheadventure #wanderlust #worldtraveller #natgeotravel #indonesia #igtravel #instatravel #traveleverywhere #traveltheworld #fromwhereyoudratherbe #wonderful_places #travelphotography #travelpic #boats #exploretheworld #opentheworld #beyourbucketlist – from Instagram

"In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words; with hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come; let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations." ~ US President Barack Obama's inaugural speech..These children, the future generation of Indonesia, had been evacuated from a village in the Maluku Island after an ethno-political conflict along religious lines. They came by boat everyday to a school that had been rebuilt after fire bombs and machetes destroyed it, seeking nothing more than to learn, to play, to be accepted and find their way in a world free of tyranny and hatred. It was a bit unnerving to stay in the village, particularly around daybreak, when the violence had initially happened. The welcome, care and hospitality we received however was heart warming along with the stories of how they had looked after each other when they'd fled into the jungle..Remembering all those who have suffered horrors these last weeks in Melbourne, London, Manchester, Kabaul, Baghdad and beyond, and particularly the family, friends and colleagues of Queensland police officer Brett Forte who was shot in the line of duty….From the archives: Maluku Islands, Indonesia, 2011….#maluku #malukuislands #indonesia #iloveindonesia #igtravel #guardiantravelsnaps #bbctravel #lonelyplanet #lonelyplanetindonesia #londonattack #brettforte #manchesterbombings #wanderlust #worldtraveller #traveltheworld #traveleverywhere #natgeotravel #betheadventure #beyourbucketlist #instatravel #inspiringquotes #barackobama #opentheworld #fromwhereyoudratherbe #wonderful_places #lonelyplanettraveller – from Instagram

Mt Merapi had erupted in October 2010 and spewed lava over homes, schools and fields in Central Java. When we came through assessing more needs (with an NGO) in early 2011 we met these kids still waiting to have their school rebuilt. In the interim the mosque was letting them use their facilities and they had just finished classes for the afternoon. A lot of their parents had lost their crops and animals and were now working cooperatively to manage herds they could jointly afford and fields they could work together. The community had really banded together, and been supported by churches, NGOs and other groups. Over 35,000 people were evacuated at this time and 353 died. Ash fell even in nearby Yogyakarta….From the archives: Merapi area, Indonesia. One of the most common questions I am asked is how I take photos of people without intruding on their privacy. Every culture is a bit different but I have found it is pretty rare people don't want their photo taken. I never hide behind bushes or do things surreptitiously and if they decline I accept it. In India I have always found people the most gregarious. They are usually absolutely thrilled when you want to photograph them, and even request it, particularly a lot of the women. And as a woman it's always a pleasure to somehow gauge something of their life and personality and share it back with them. This woman was in a tribal village in Orissa and had been watching me all day as I took students around for @camerasforasia. When I came by with one of the girls doing portraits of anyone that was interested (as they would get copies later) she was outside her house waiting for us. The whisper of a smile here says it all…..From the archives: Padaghuda, Orissa, India….#guardiantravelsnaps #bbctravel #lonelyplanet #lonelyplanetindia #festival #wanderlust #explore #travelphotography #visitedplanet #iloveindia #worldtraveller #traveleverywhere #exploretheworld #traveltheworld #opentheworld #instatravel #fromwhereyoudratherbe #wonderful_places #beyourbucketlist #betheadventure #lonelyplanettraveller #natgeotravel #igtravel#portraits #India #women #Orissa – from Instagram

From the archives: These boys were playing "WW" in a mountain village in North India where I was teaching with @camerasforasia in 2015. I assumed it was their interpretation of the American wrestling show and declined as gracefully as I could as it wasn't quite clear what was involved. Moments later this pile up happened with bodies everywhere. 😯 It was good to see smiles all round but I couldn't help but wonder just how they had planned to tackle me – twice their size, opposite gender, a foreigner and their teacher. Just love the inhibitions of children! ️….#guardiantravelsnaps #bbctravel #lonelyplanet #lonelyplanetindia #india #uttarakhand #children #wrestling #wanderlust #explore #travelphotography #visitedplanet #iloveiNdia #worldtraveller #traveleverywhere #exploretheworld #traveltheworld #opentheworld #instatravel #fromwhereyoudratherbe #wonderful_places #beyourbucketlist #betheadventure #lonelyplanettraveller #natgeotravel #igtravel – from Instagram
