I stayed with this family in Bhurung in the Annapurna region of Nepal while teaching for @camerasforasia. Somehow I knew there was a story behind the quiet stoicism of the father of my host. As we ate breakfast one morning, sipping chai and eating biscuits, I asked, with translation, about his life. He had served for the Indian Army for several decades and only returned to the village when he retired. He told me stories of incursions and artillery fire and mentioned places I knew. A picture came together of his fortitude in remote, cold and difficult places and in another country for another nation's army. Respect….From the archives: March 2017, Bhurung, Nepal….#guardiantravelsnaps #bbctravel #lonelyplanet #lonelyplanetnepal #festival #wanderlust #explore #travelphotography #visitedplanet #ilovenepal #worldtraveller #traveleverywhere #exploretheworld #traveltheworld #opentheworld #instatravel #fromwhereyoudratherbe #wonderful_places #beyourbucketlist #betheadventure #lonelyplanettraveller #natgeotravel #igtravel #nepal #tatopani #annapurna #portrait #faces – from Instagram

The back story of this photo is worth telling. I was chasing around a group of small, uncooperative kids (baby goats) in this village where I was teaching for @camerasforasia. I was trying to get a photo with the snow mountain in the back and this youngster saw me and came to my aid. He literally ran out and just tackled one, and I mean a full fledged rugby style tackle, to bring one, under protest, so I could get a photo. By this stage I wasn't that interested in the goats but him! He beamed, his parents smiled, the goat protested and I got a photograph … as did he a few weeks later thanks to Nepali friends returning to the Annapurna region….From the archives: March 2017, Nepal….#guardiantravelsnaps #bbctravel #lonelyplanet #lonelyplanetnepal #festival #wanderlust #explore #travelphotography #visitedplanet #ilovenepal #worldtraveller #traveleverywhere #exploretheworld #traveltheworld #opentheworld #instatravel #fromwhereyoudratherbe #wonderful_places #beyourbucketlist #betheadventure #lonelyplanettraveller #natgeotravel #igtravel #nepal #annapurna #tatopani #goat #children – from Instagram

A little face peers at me as I wander around Kagbeni in Nepal's Upper Mustang region. Walking through here is like entering a medieval jewel with mud and stone houses and monasteries that seem something from an age past. Animals are kept in the house compounds overnight but taken out to graze during the day and so the town seems to empty during the day but be a cacophony of bleats and moos morning and night. The old 16th century fortress and red monastery are the key features in town. While the fortress has remained abandoned, efforts have been made to revitalise the monastery (see a previous post)….From the archives: March, 2017….#guardiantravelsnaps #bbctravel #lonelyplanet #lonelyplanetnepal #festival #wanderlust #explore #travelphotography #visitedplanet #ilovenepal #worldtraveller #traveleverywhere #exploretheworld #traveltheworld #opentheworld #instatravel #fromwhereyoudratherbe #wonderful_places #beyourbucketlist #betheadventure #lonelyplanettraveller #natgeotravel #igtravel #nepal #kagbeni #mustang #uppermustang #children – from Instagram

New life in the Manang region of Nepal begins on the side of the road for these goats. They were born just before we came by. This region only opened to outsiders in the 1970s and a very bumpy road was only built through here a few years ago on the old trekking route. The Manang traders, known as Manangies, are renowned for their skills and are mainly Buddhist. Chortens, mani walls, prayer flags and monasteries are common, along with agriculture such as herds of yak, horses and of course goats like this…….#guardiantravelsnaps #bbctravel #lonelyplanet #lonelyplanetnepal #festival #wanderlust #explore #travelphotography #visitedplanet #ilovenepal #worldtraveller #traveleverywhere #exploretheworld #traveltheworld #opentheworld #instatravel #fromwhereyoudratherbe #wonderful_places #beyourbucketlist #betheadventure #lonelyplanettraveller #natgeotravel #igtravel #nepal #manang #goats – from Instagram
