Photo of the day: terraced hillsides in Nepal

Another post showcasing the beauty of Nepal: terraced hillsides above a river on the trek linking the Annapurna Sanctuary walk and Ghorepani.

A full gallery of this area will be added shortly.

Photo of the day: Woman with chicken near Chiule

This woman was walking along the track between Chiule and Chomrong (near Annapurna Sanctuary) with chickens in tow. You couldn’t help but think the journey probably wouldn’t end well for the fowl!

As per my previous post this is a snippet of the photos soon to be uploaded from my recent trip to Nepal. Stay tuned for more.

Photo of the day: View from Poon Hill

This image of the Annapurna peaks at sunrise was taken at Poon Hill just above Ghorepani. Brilliant rhododendron blooms offset the hillsides in Spring.

As per the last post I returned (finally) to Nepal after a 12 year hiatus and it was great to get back into what I consider my part of the world – high altitude, Himalaya, mountains and village life so reminiscent of where I used to live in India.

Hopefully this image is just a teaser to keep you checking back for more images of the roof of the world that I’ll upload shortly (plus some images of Songkran festivities in Bangkok and Borneo, Malaysia).

Heading to Nepal

I was last in Nepal in mid 2000 when I visited Kathmandu and Pokhara with friends, visited some former Nepalese students and undertook part of the Annapurna Circuit. It was a fantastic few weeks.

I’m heading back again this week, 11 years later, and keen to see what has changed in the Himalayan Kingdom. I’ll be visiting much the same areas plus doing part of the Annapurna Sanctuary trek. Can’t wait.

Back in 2000 I was still shooting E6 so it will be fun to reshoot a lot of those images and get some more. Posts might be sporadic until my return in late April.

In the meantime here are some images from the Annapurna Circuit.

Photo of the day : sunset at Pamukkale

People often ask how you take a particular shot. A lot of my photography feels instinctive, the best shots seeming to form themselves without much conscious thought.

For example I just uploaded this image to the new site today of a sunset in Pamukkale, Turkey. The sun was going down and I could see a mosque turret in the distance and knew that when the light actually hit the turret it would glow but I was too high up a mountain or hill for the best light and the sun was going to disappear any minute. So I started running down to get to the right position in time – literally running down this mountain. When I got as far down as I could I snapped it – just one shot. But it was just the right moment, catching the top of the turret.
