"If only faces could talk." ~ Pat Summerall….This face could probably tell you a story of life on the northern plateau of Orissa (Odisha) where survival is largely through subsistence farming and manual labour. Where they can be cut off by the river during the monsoon season for weeks or months at a time. Where phones don't work unless you climb a nearby hill. Where many of the older children leave to attend school several hours away. But the face could also show a community working with him – perhaps 4-5 men on the same task, as others built a house nearby, a teacher worked hard in the school to educate the younger kids (and was not always paid) and women washed clothes diligently in the river and sent school kids off in spotless uniforms. The face could also tell you of the largely pristine nature of the surroundings free of rubbish and plastic. Of well tended animals who grazed in the fields and houses that were spotless. There's a lot to see in the lines of one face……#igtravel #lonelyplanet #lonelyplanetindia #India #Orissa #Odisha #portrait #grain #farming #agriculture #lonelyolanettraveller #guardiantravelsnaps #bbctravel #betheadventure #traveltheworld #wanderlust #worldtraveller #instatravel #traveleverywhere #visitedplanet #exploretheworld #fromwhereyoudratherbe #beyourbucketlist #opentheworld #travelphotography #wonderful_places #travelpic – from Instagram

Opening night at St Vincent's hospital for the next six month instalment of the Outside In artist program. The idea of the exhibition is to bring the outside world in to patients and their families, many of whom are palliative. It has been fabulous to be an exhibitor here over the years, most particularly as my friend Rudy was well cared for here before he died some years ago. He loved travel and photography and all work here is dedicated to him. This year I submitted works based on the idea of pilgrimage featuring images from the Camino de Santiago walked for @drmarklanedc. There are 11 prints on level 8, while level 2 has a small selection this week of all contributing artists. Well done St Vincent's!…#outsidein #stvincentshospital #stvincents #artexhibition #visitedplanet #photography #caminodesantiago #camino #visitedplanetexhibition – from Instagram
"After women, flowers are the most lovely things God has given the world." ~ Christian Dior….In India it's pretty rare you're alone or even unobserved, and I have often looked up to find eyes on me, a shy smile and intense curiosity, particularly from local women. Once we all get beyond our shyness the engaging, relational and friendly nature of a shared commonality shines through despite how much I am sure we still intrigue each other! …From the archives: Orissa, India, 2015….#wonderful_places #travelphotography #Orissa #travelpic #traveltheworld #Odisha #lonelyplanet #lonelyplanetindia #lonelyplanettraveller #bbctravel #beyourbucketlist #betheadventure #traveltheworld #fromwhereyoudratherbe #exploretheworld #wanderlust #worldtraveller #travelpic #guardiantravelsnaps #portrait #women #indianwomen #indiaportraits #igtravel #instatravel #traveleverywhere #beyourbucketlist #wonderful_places #travelphotography #opentheworld #natgeotravel #natgeo – from Instagram

- "Education is the passport for the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today." ~ Malcolm X…These kids are from a school in Sisikudi in Orissa, India. Literacy rates here have improved in recent years and according to the 2011 National Census it's 73.5%, marginally behind the national average of 74%. The difference comes in gender with male literacy at 75.9% and female at 50.97%.
