"What is the fatal charm of Italy? What do we find there that can be found nowhere else? I believe it is a certain permission to be human, which other places, other countries, lost long ago." ~ Erica Jong..People frequently comment to me on the beauties and delights of Italy which I am fortunate to call home for part of the year. Why do I keep going back? Jong is right that it has a charm that draws people like a dream of what life could be, almost akin to a fairytale. It's also warm and sunny for a lot of the year which you don't find everywhere in Europe. It's slightly maddening and chaotic, full of good food and people that appreciate it, and marches to the beat of its own drum. Art, beaches, mountains and lakes also mean it's beautiful at every turn. But above all people are generous, kind and always have something to chat about. A flashback to this week in January 2011 when my parent's home in Auchenflower sat for several days in 4.67m of water as a result of flooding across the state of Queensland. These floods impacted three quarters of council areas in the state and claimed 38 lives. Literacy rates here have improved in recent years and according to the 2011 National Census it's 73.5%, marginally behind the national average of 74%. The difference comes in gender with male literacy at 75.9% and female at 50.97%.
